Common Mistakes Beginners Make in the Gym and How to Fix Them

By Jess Aguilar

New to the gym? You’re not alone.
Everyone starts somewhere, and mistakes are part of the process. Here are a few common ones we see and how to fix them:

Skipping warm-ups

Start with 5–10 minutes of light movement and use stretches focused on the muscle groups you’ll be training to protect your joints and improve performance.

Using too much weight

Focus on form first; strength will follow. Sometimes progress isn’t determined by the weight you’re lifting, practicing proper form ensures activation of the targeted muscles, improves stability and control, and prevents injury.

Inconsistent workouts

Progress comes from showing up regularly, not being perfect. Not all days will be easy so we can’t count on motivation or determination when it comes to showing up for our lifts. Consistency is key. Your best today may not be your “best” from 2 days ago, but you still showed up for yourself!

Not asking for help

When Google and Youtube University just don’t cut it, our staff is here to support you, questions are always welcome!

The gym is a place to learn, grow, and build confidence. Take your time, trust the process, and remember, you belong here.
